I painted this young tree in Kew Gardens the week before Christmas 2020, I couldn't find the label but I think that it is spruce? 2020 was a year of shutting down and it was pure pleasure to sit in Kew and freely paint this tree which seemed to be reaching up to the sky with energy and strength. I used a fairly thick, long bristled handmade brush to express essence and not detail.

This banner is painted on handmade Seichosen paper from Japan which is unbleached and has a soft natural colour. The paper has a unique and subtle texture of kozo fibres along with the watermarks of the paper makers Su or frame.

The piece is suspended from a simple batten and clear thread which can be removed on request if an alternative method of display is desired.
